Internships

The following is a collection of non-Arkansas-related internship programs and databases. Some are specifically targeted to minority students, undergraduates, etc. while others are general programs for any interested student. 

• The American Enterprise Institute is a private, conservative not-for-profit think tank with its main offices in Washington, D.C. Approximately 45 internship positions are available in areas that include economic policy, foreign and defense policy, social and political studies, public relations, marketing, government relations, and communications. All Interns are paired with a scholar or business director whose area of expertise coincides with the intern's own interests. Application deadlines are December 1 (for Spring semester), April 1 (for Summer semester), and September 1 (for Fall semester).
• The Aspen Institute Program on Philanthropy and Social Innovation (PSI) in Washington, D.C., offers The William Randolph Hearst Endowed Fellowship for Minority Students to one student three times annually. The fellowship, which is based on academic excellence and need, is open to both undergraduate and graduate students of color. The Hearst Fellow must be able to work as an intern for 12-15 weeks in the Washington, D.C. office of the Aspen Institute during the academic semester in which the fellowship is awarded. Fall and Spring interns will work part-time (15-20 hours per week) and Summer interns will be full-time. Application deadlines are July 17 for Fall, November 20 for Spring, and March 11 for Summer. 
• The Borgen Project is a national campaign that is focused on global poverty. They offer both in-person internships in their Downtown Seattle office and telecommute internships, which can be done from anywhere in the world. These positions operate independently, but must meet weekly deadlines, attend meetings via conference call and submit frequent reports. To apply for internships, email jobs@borgenproject.org and include the position in the subject. Intern candidates must typically go through two interviews and a skills test. 
• City Internships programs are open to students from any year and with any major, they may choose a placement in one of 9 career fields: Banking & Financial services; Consulting & Professional services; Law & Politics; Technology & Engineering; Marketing, Advertising & PR; Media, Entertainment & Journalism; Art, Fashion & Design; Start-ups & Entrepreneurship; Charities, NFPs & NGOs. Programs are available in 9 locations: London, Paris, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington DC, Chicago, San Francisco. Students can apply at https://city-internships.com/apply. 
• The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation internship programs bring the policy making process to life. The nation's capital serves as the backdrop for internship programs that offer personal, educational, and leadership development. Students leave these programs better prepared to meet the complex challenges facing current and future generations. CBCF offers three internship programs: the Congressional Internship Program, the Emerging Leaders Internship Program, and the Communications Internship Program, and interns will receive a $3,000 or $4,000 stipend depending on their specific program. Applications are due in June for the Fall programs and November for the Spring programs. 
• The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's Congressional Internship Program provides college students with a paid work placement in a Congressional Office or Federal Agency for a period of twelve weeks (Spring/Fall) or eight weeks (Summer). This unmatched experience allows students to learn first hand about our nation's legislative process. 
• The Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute's Global Leaders Program offers a unique internship experience for students to develop their personal, educational, and leadership skills. Opportunity for students to gain exposure to the inner workings of the United States Congress, Federal Government and Washington, D.C.-based think tanks and international institutions. 
• The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, a branch of the Democratic Party, is the party's national organization dedicated to getting Democrats elected to Congress. Work on behalf of a current or future Member of Congress; establish lasting connections and gain campaign experience! They have four departments to chose from, and applications are accepted on a rolling basis for internship sessions running Spring (January-Mid May), Summer (Late May-Mid August), and Fall (Late August-December). 
• FairVote is a non-partisan non-profit organization that seeks to make democracy fair, functional, and fully representative. We believe there are simple, common sense ways to strengthen our democracy and ensure all voices are heard, all views are respected, and every vote counts. The internship program is based in Takoma Park, Maryland, and offers participants the opportunity to work on projects that advance reforms at the local, state, and national level. Interns are allowed to work in the field in which they are most interested, be it research, activism, communications, administration, or design. Interns build skills and learn through workshops, seminars, and work which is often featured in our educational, advocacy, and outreach activities. 
• Federal Bureau of Investigation - The FBI has an honors internship program for undergraduate and graduate students that offers a unique opportunity to learn and work alongside FBI employees while getting a head start on an exceptional career. • The Fund for American Studies was founded to help instill in young people an appreciation for the American form of government and the free enterprise system. TFAS sponsors institutes that teach college students about the principles and values upon which the United States was founded. Each institute offers classroom study, internships, and special events. Students in the summer are housed together at Georgetown University while the Capital Semester students live in newly-renovated intern residence building located on Capitol Hill. 
• Gotoco provides English-speaking students with funded opportunities to participate in summer camps in China where they can learn Mandarin, explore the country and work towards a TEFL certificate. Application processes and requirements can be found on their website. 
• The Green Corps is looking for motivated students to help protect Arkansas’ climate and wildlife by demonstrating ongoing, growing support for smart energy policies in the state. We will be organizing community events, collecting petition signatures, and much more to achieve our goals. We need interns and volunteers to achieve our goals and support clean energy! Applicants should be willing to devote at least 10-15 hours per week to campaign work. 
• The Guide to Green Careers on LearnToBecome.org offers a section on Green Internships, which includes a small sample of the types of internships available to green-minded college students, including the Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Green Building Council. 
• The Henry Clay Center for Statesmanship offers students the chance to attend a fully funded public policy summer program, The College Student Congress. Current college juniors interested in public policy, politics, law, government, public service, history and economics can apply and be selected to attend and represent their state. Selected students will have opportunities to research and write public policy on current national issues, meet diverse peers, develop new interpersonal and leadership skills, and interact with guest speakers. Applications are available through Nov. 30th.
• The Heritage Foundation offers paid internship opportunities in research and policy promotion, and is looking for rising juniors and seniors interested in experiencing D.C. firsthand. This program offers opportunities in research (Asian Studies, Latin America, Russia/Eurasia, national security, international economics, energy, regulatory policy, law, welfare reform, etc.) and policy promotion (marketing, outreach, communications, accounting, business, development, etc.) You can find a full list online of their open positions in policy, promotion, business and more; application deadlines are October 1 (for Spring), February 1 (for Summer) and June 15 (for fall).
• The Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities National Internship Program offers internships to Hispanic students who attend institutions that enroll significant numbers of Hispanic students. Internships are offered in Washington D.C. as well as other locations throughout the country. 
• Idealist.org is a project of Action Without Borders, a nonprofit organization founded in 1995 with offices in the United States and Argentina. Idealist is an interactive site where people and organizations can exchange resources and ideas, locate opportunities, including jobs and internships, and take steps toward building a world where all people can lead free and dignified lives. 
• Internships.com is an internship marketplace that brings students, employers, and higher education institutions together to match students with the right internship to kick start their career. It also provides an Internship Predictor tool to help you find the right job. Employers are able to post their internships and student jobs, and browse Internship.com's extensive resume database. Searches are available by major, location, or company name to find the right opportunity for you. 
• Lead For America - a non-profit organization that exists to ensure that our nation's leaders are working on our communities' toughest challenges offers fellowship opportunities for public service minded students from the U of A. Application deadline is Oct. 1st for the opportunity to be selected and placed in two-year paid fellowship positions in local community organizations. More information can be found on the website.
• Mount Vernon Leadership Fellows - The Mount Vernon Leadership Fellows Program is a highly selective summer institute for rising college juniors, offering unparalleled learning and networking opportunities at the home of America's first president outside our nation's capital.  Students spend a fully funded six weeks living and learning at George Washington's Mount Vernon. 
• The National Academy of Social Insurance, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization made up of the nation's leading experts on challenging internship opportunities. These are nationally-competitive internships with a select number of placements made each year. The program consists of a 12-week summer semester internship that usually spans May to August, depending on the student's college schedule. Students receive a $3,500 honorarium for their internship experience. 
• National Organization for Women (NOW) is a non-profit feminist organization with over 550 chapters nationwide. An important element of our program is comprehensive leadership training. A NOW intern is a commitment to apply the skills learned during the internship and to become, or continue to be, an activist leader. NOW offers both full- and part-time internships throughout the year primarily in Washington, D.C. Interested applicants should apply by March 15 for Summer, June 15 for Fall, and November 1 for Spring. 
• The New Era Colorado Foundation is a multi-issue nonprofit organization committed to engaging, educating, and training a new generation of active citizens and young leaders in Colorado. They have spring, summer, and fall internship programs in Denver and Boulder that train the next generation of young leaders through an intensive, hand-on leadership development program. Interested students should fill out their online application and email their resume to internships@neweracolorado.org.
• The Obama Foundation is looking to hire a diverse cohort of passionate, mission-oriented, and qualified interns to serve in their Chicago and D.C. offices. Internships run for 14 weeks and interns are required to work 40 hours a week in either the Chicago or Washington, D.C. office. Interns play a key role in providing departments at the Obama Foundation with the administrative, logistical, and operational assistance needed to execute their work. 
• The Office of the Curator at the Supreme Court of the United States offers internships throughout the year. Applications will be accepted from undergraduate students who have completed at least four semesters of coursework, and from graduate students. During their time in the Curator's Office, interns gain a substantial working knowledge of the role and functions of the Supreme Court, its history, and the architecture of the building. Each intern is also assigned to work with a staff member on curatorial projects, such as cataloging photographs and objects, assisting with the management of visitor programs, caring for historic objects, organizing manuscript collections, and conducting research. Applications are due by March 28th for Summer Session, July 15th for Fall Semester/Quarter, and October 15th for Spring Semester/Quarter and Winter 3-5 Week Session. 
• Pi Sigma Alpha offers the McManus Washington Internship Scholarships annually to members participating in political science internship programs in Washington, DC for the summer or fall terms. Nominations are due May 1. 
• The Presidential Internship Program at The American University in Cairo (AUC) provides recent university graduates who are American citizens or permanent residents the opportunity to work at the highest levels of an international university, experience life in Cairo and learn Arabic. Interns spend one academic year working at AUC. In addition to the primary focus on professional development, interns study Arabic through AUC's School of Continuing Education, benefit from faculty privileges such as faculty housing and library access, and enjoy AUC-sponsored trips to discover the culture and history of Cairo, Egypt, and the Middle East. 
• The Project Vote Smart National Internship Program provides a unique lesson in the study of American politics. Students from across the nation and around the world come to our high tech research center in the Montana Rockies for ten weeks to help American citizens educate themselves about elected officials and candidates. • Public Policy and International Affairs offers unpaid internships in the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms. Internships are open to undergraduate Juniors and Seniors and graduate students. These internships are an excellent opportunity to gain substantial professional experience, engage with prominent leaders from across the country, and gain valuable experience with an entrepreneurial, mission-driven organization. • The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is a six-week program designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends along with a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. 
• The Republican National Committee internships are available within each of their divisions. Applications for both Spring and Fall are accepted on a rolling basis; there is no official deadline. The RNC's Summer Internship Program is the Eisenhower Intern Program; this is a structured, full-time program and space is limited, so application materials are due in mid-February. 
• Senator Roy Blunt (MO) offers internships in his Missouri offices and his Washington, DC office. Internships are for fall, spring, or summer semesters. 
• The Sierra Club is one of our nation's largest grassroots conservation organizations. Their statement of purpose is to explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the Earth. They have several different internship opportunities in their San Francisco (home office), and Washington, D.C. locations. 
• Students for a New American Politics PAC - Entry level positions in politics are often low-or non-paying and otherwise hard to access. We provide fellowships for underrepresented students to work on progressive congressional compaigns. SNAP recruits and chooses outstanding people from across the country to work as Field Organizers on competitive races during the summer, and then gives them the necessary training and stipend to succeed in the field. 
• The Terrorism Research Center (TRC), located in 101 Old Main, specializes in conducting emperical research on domestic terrorism incidents, providing information to law enforcement and intelligence agencies, and informing homeland security policy.
• The Trust Women Foundation is a dynamic, emerging non-profit that focuses on facilitating reproductive freedom presently in the Midwest and the South. Trust Women offers both in-house and virtual internships, and is seeking motivated, take-charge interns who aren't afraid to take the reins and make their own path. To become a Trust Women intern, applicants must be hard-working and dedicated, with a passion for reproductive justice and an openness to learning. • The Morris K. Udall Foundation Native American Congressional Internship Program provides American Indian and Alaska Native students with the opportunity to gain practical experience with the federal legislative process in order to understand first-hand the government-to-government relationship between Tribes and the Federal government.
• The United States Department of State offers two internship programs, the U.S. Department of State Student Internship Program (unpaid), and the Pathways Program (paid), both of which enable students to obtain job experience in a foreign affairs environment. 
• The United States House of Representatives offers numerous internship positions both in Washington, D.C. and at Congressional district offices through out the nation. The application process takes time and effort, often requiring essays and interviews. 
• The Washington Center is a nonprofit organization that helps locate internships on Capitol Hill and in the Washington D.C. area. Offered primarily in Washington, D.C. and selected cities abroad, the internship programs consist of a substantive work experience tailored to the student's interests, academic coursework, and civic and leadership programming. 
• The Washington Internship Institute is a project of the Institute for Experiential Learning (IEL), an educational nonprofit organization, is committed to individual development through excellence in experiential education. Active learning by participants, including disciplined reflection about individual goals, intercultural competence, and personal attention from IEL staff, are at the heart of IEL's mission. They offer resources for obtaining internships in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors offer first-hand knowledge and practical experience for all majors. 
• The White House is one of the most prestigious internships that any student can obtain providing a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and build leadership skills. 
• WISH Internships is a division of Washington Intern Student Housing (WISH), a Capitol Hill Institution that has served interns, internship coordinators and universities for 20 years. WISH Internships matches qualified students with premier internships in the nation's capital. It partners with government agencies, Congressional offices, advocacy groups, think tanks, multinational corporations, trade associations, the court system, and the media, providing internships in American government & politics, business & consulting, international relations & conflict resolution, and media & communications. Suggested application deadlines are as follows: April 1 for Summer, June 15 for Fall, and November 15 for Spring. 
• The Women's Foreign Policy Group believes that it is crucial to ensure that women's voices are heard and that women leaders are fully engaged in finding new approaches and solutions. At their programs, interns meet with accomplished international affairs professionals and learn from their career paths. Part-time internships are unpaid or for college credit; full-time interns who commit to 3.5 months during the school year or 3 months during the summer are eligible for a $1,000 stipend. All interns must be available to work a minimum of two full days per week. Application deadlines are as follows: November 25th (for Spring); April 1st (for Summer); and August 8th (for Fall).
